The Cold Greenhouses, around 20 minutes by bus via the Azul line

At the current location of the Lisbon cold greenhouse was a basalt quarry in the early 19th century. The quarry ceased operation because of a water source which affected quarrying.

This is how, in 1912, upon the initiative of a gardener, a sanctuary area was created for delicate plants from all over the world, cultivated for the plantations of the Avenida da Liberdade.

World War I delayed this plan, and the plants took root in this small sheltered place.

In 1926, architect and painter Raul Carapinha, after discovering this beautiful green area, devised a project aimed at turning it into a greenhouse, which was completed in 1930 and officially inaugurated three years later.
