A bit of history about the Château Saint-Georges

The fort, built by the Muslims in the middle of the 11th century, was the last bastion of defence for the elites residing in the citadel: the Moorish mayor, whose palace was nearby, and the elite of the city's administration, whose houses can still be seen today on the archaeological site. The castle, which was carefully built on top of one of the seven hills of the city, was an ideal location to allow this bastion to protect the citadel. It crowns the highest hill in Lisbon, and therefore offers the most beautiful panoramic view of the city, especially over the bridge and the river Tejo. The view alone is worth a visit to the St. George's Castle. Its high location also allows any visitor to see its silhouette from the city centre.
