History of Plaza Luis Camoes and location of the hotel

For your stay in Lisbon, the Luís Camoes Square, also called "Largo do Camoes", is a dedication by the country's leaders to one of its most famous poets, who evoked the deep history and customs of Portugal. 11 meters high and decorated with rich 16th century engravings, a statue of him is located in the center of the square. It is located between the border of Chiado and Bairro Alto with a general theme reminiscent of the Portuguese caravel, the mermaid and the sea.

History of Luís Camoes Square

It was around 1862, during the time of King Luis I, that the architect Vitor Bastos, in homage to the author of the poem of the Lusiades: Luís Vas de Camoes, erected a huge bronze statue of the latter. Statues of seven of Portugal's greatest writers, critics and poets adorn the pedestal of the statue of Luís Camoes. A true symbol of epic literature, this renowned author gives his name to a beautiful open space square. The beauty of the architectural buildings and the drawings that are engraved on the ground give the charm to this historical place that has become more and more touristic. Its black and white cobblestones and the two large churches of Loreto and Encarnaçao that surround it blend in perfectly with the statue of Luís Camoes in the centre of the square. As the number of visitors to the square has increased over the last twenty years, an underground car park has been built for the convenience of the vehicles of the various tourists. Being the main stop of tramway no. 28, it is an essential stopover for a tourist tour of Lisbon.

An emblematic square in Bairro Alto

As lively, warm and pleasant as the surrounding districts, Luís Camoes Square stands out as the limit of the  upper district of Bairro Alto.
